Sunday 27th February 11am - 3.45pm

Join our pupils and take part in a fun and interactive day of music, open to young musicians aged 9 to 16 who play any instrument. No specific grade level is required.

Our expert teaching staff will help you explore some of the activities that go on in a normal day at a specialist music school. Bring your instrument to take part, and immerse yourself in a supportive atmosphere that we are sure you'll enjoy

The day begins at 11am and will finish at 3.45pm. It includes:
  • Interpretation & Improvisation
  • Instrumental Coaching
  • Performance Class
  • String Ensemble
  • Aural Kahoot!
We hope that all participants will play an active role in sessions but we understand some may prefer to watch and listen.

Places are FREE, but limited. Please book in advance.
Lunch is provided.

Parents

You are most welcome to join us at the start of the day for coffee and a short presentation about St Mary's Music School. There will also be the opportunity to observe certain sessions and to join us for the closing concert by St Mary's Music School pupils. We regret that because of restrictions on numbers in our building due to Covid 19, only 1 adult may attend per participant.

Programme

Interpretation & Improvisation
You are invited to bring your instruments to this interactive group session that will focus on exploring and developing ways to create music in the moment and on reacting spontaneously to other musicians. Everyone is welcome to join in and no previous experience is necessary.

Instrumental Coaching and Piano Forum
Imagine having your own dedicated accompanist who works with you throughout your school career. It’s an exceptional opportunity given to our pupils and something that is not even available at university or conservatoire. See how this session works in practice and let us know if you would like to take part. All you need to do is bring a piece with you that you would like to play and a score for the accompanist. For pianists there will be the opportunity to take part in Piano Forum.

Performance Class
Described as a ‘safe performance space’, weekly, guided Performance Classes allow you to try out your pieces in front of a small, supportive audience of your peers. Who better to offer praise and supportive commentary than your friends? Again, everyone is welcome to take part.

String Ensemble and Instrumental Classes
Playing, rehearsing and performing with others are at the heart of music-making in the school.  Come and join our String Ensemble in an open rehearsal, either with your instrument (violin, viola, cello, double bass) or as an observer. String players of all levels are welcome and music will be available in advance.  There are alternative options for other instrumentalists.

Aural Kahoot!
Every school day begins with 15 minute aural class which helps you develop your listening skills. In our Kahoot! version, pit your wits against your peers and experience an aural class like no other.

Finale Concert
Round off the afternoon with a short concert from pupils of St Mary’s Music School, many of whom you will have met during your day.

"When I was young I never knew a place like this existed and I wish I had sooner. You are provided with such incredible opportunities and teaching as well as being surrounded by such wonderful people. If you have an interest or passion for music, please come and join us to experience what it is like to be immersed in the world of music at St Mary's Music School. "
