The Seven Hills Project
The academic year 2022/23 marks 50 years since St Mary's Music School opened its doors to instrumentalists. Leading up to this landmark event, the School has devised the Seven Hills Project – a major new music project celebrating composition, creativity and community, using topography as an underpinning theme.
The Seven Hills of Edinburgh
Seven poems about the hills, written by Alexander McCall Smith, seven commissioned chamber works, inspired by the hills and poems, written by seven composers, with a connection to Scotland or to St Mary's Music School , seven concert premieres, spread over the next seven terms, which provide seven metaphorical foothills that lead to St Mary's Music School's 50th birthday celebrations in June '23 at The Queen's Hall, where pupils and alumni will perform a major new commission written by school's Vice-President, Sir James MacMillan CBE.
Along the way, there will also be workshops for schoolchildren across Scotland, events with communities, and opportunities for emerging artists to work with our professional partners.
